This morning, Blakey Johnston led over 1,000 surfers in a world-record-breaking paddle out at Cronulla Beach, honoring both youth mental health and the spirit of community that makes these events so powerful.
The previous record—600 paddlers in Port Macquarie in 2013—was set in tribute to shark attack victim Zac Young, a loss that deeply impacted the surfing community. Today’s effort stood not only as a new record but also as a continued acknowledgment of that legacy.
To officially break the record, participants needed to link hands for one minute—but in true overachieving Shire fashion, they went for two, just to be sure. “We figured if we’re going to do it, we may as well make it unbeatable,” said one participant, still massaging his cramping biceps.
Eyewitnesses described the moment as “beautiful” and “surprisingly well-coordinated for a bunch of people floating in the ocean.” Others simply described it as “the longest they’ve ever seen Shire locals go without arguing about parking.”
Johnston, who already holds the record for the world’s longest surf (40 hours at Cronulla Beach in 2023), now officially owns two world records—making him arguably the most accomplished person to ever emerge from a local surf club.
The event was all in support of youth mental health programs, proving once again that the Shire doesn’t just come together for beer and barbecues—we come together to support something bigger than ourselves.
Congrats to @blakeyjohnston and everyone who participated and supported the Worlds Biggest Paddle Out event.
