Coach in blue kit with a whistle on a soccer field, parents and spectators in background. Headline: Dreams of the World Cup: Shire Parents Pin Hopes on School Holiday Soccer Camps.

In ground-breaking research that’s left local soccer fields echoing with the sound of misplaced optimism, 80% of Sutherland Shire parents enrolling their children in school holiday soccer camps firmly believe their offspring are future World Cup material.

The study, conducted by the University of Unrealistic Expectations, found that the combination of shiny new cleats, a well-placed corner kick, and a sugar-fueled lunchbox has parents seeing dollar signs and golden boots.

“I’ve never seen such raw talent,” said Gymea dad Paul Munro, referencing his 7-year-old son’s ability to occasionally toe-poke the ball in the right direction. “He’s like a young Ronaldo, but with shin pads that light up.”

Local soccer camp organizers report a surge in registrations, with parents clamoring for slots and occasionally offering baked goods to bribe coaches for “extra focus” on their budding stars. “We’ve even had a mum ask if scouts from Manchester United attend our clinics,” said coach Tim “Tackles” Davies, shaking his head. “This is the Sutherland Shire, not the Premier League.”

Endeavour Sports High School Principal, Dr. Joanne Haines, revealed a surprising ripple effect: “We’ve seen a 40% increase in applications for soccer scholarships in the coming years. It seems everyone’s convinced their child is the next Matilda or Socceroo. We’re even considering expanding our trophy cabinet—just in case.”

But not all parents are delusional. “Sure, my kid missed the ball 15 times today,” said Engadine mum Rachel Grant, watching her daughter gleefully roll in the grass. “But maybe she’s the next Sam Kerr in disguise. Or at least a TikTok sensation.”

The Shire’s soccer stores have been inundated with parents buying premium gear. “We sold out of mini Messi jerseys in 20 minutes,” confirmed a Miranda Sportsworld employee. “I even heard a dad say he’s drafting sponsorship emails to Adidas.”

As the whistle blows on another day of soccer camp, one thing is clear: Shire parents may not be raising the next generation of champions, but they’ve certainly mastered the art of dreaming big
