Cronulla, NSW: What began as a peaceful coastal suburb known for its beaches and laid-back vibe has become the frontline in a simmering conflict dubbed “The Great E-Bike War.” Residents, pedestrians, and rogue electric riders are locked in a battle for dominance over Cronulla’s promenades, footpaths, and café strips.
Reports indicate that local retirees have formed a vigilante group, “Pedestrian Justice Patrol” (PJP), armed with walking sticks and a firm belief that “if it’s got wheels, it belongs on the road.” Meanwhile, a mysterious faction of e-bike and scooter riders, calling themselves “Watt Warriors,” have been spotted zipping through pedestrian zones at lightning speed, leaving behind a trail of startled tourists and spilled lattes.
“We’re just trying to enjoy a quiet stroll,” complained resident Gladys McIntyre, 72, who claims she was “buzzed” by a reckless e-scooter while walking her Shih Tzu, Muffin. “These scooters come out of nowhere! It’s like being ambushed by silent ninjas with Bluetooth speakers.”
Local authorities are reportedly overwhelmed, with one council spokesperson admitting, “We tried painting more bike lanes, but they just use them as warm-up tracks before hitting the esplanade.”
Proposed solutions range from mandatory training courses called “Scoot Smart” to introducing an e-bike curfew at sunset. However, talks broke down after both sides accused the council of being “powered by hot air.”
Until a truce is reached, Cronulla locals are urged to remain vigilant — and perhaps invest in shin guards.
