In a bold response to last week’s announcement of the highly anticipated E-Bike 500 in the Sutherland Shire Gazette, the Shire’s middle-aged residents have decided to take matters into their own hands. Not content to let teens and tweens dominate the e-bike scene, these seasoned cyclists—affectionately known as MAMILs (Middle-Aged Men in Lycra)—are planning their own event: the "Masters E-Bike 500."
“We saw the kids getting all the attention, and frankly, we felt left out,” said Gary “The Gear Grinder” Wilson, 48. “Just because we’re a bit older doesn’t mean we can’t tear up the streets too—on our terms.”
The original E-Bike 500, aimed at younger riders, sparked a wave of excitement in the Shire. But it also ignited a fire in the local MAMIL community, who quickly realised they wanted in on the action. “It’s not just about the race,” said Jan “Turbo” Tucker, 52. “It’s about showing we’ve still got it—and maybe giving the kids a run for their money.”
The announcement has sent ripples through the local cycling scene. Some teens are reportedly worried about being outpaced by their own parents, while others see it as a challenge to stay ahead. “My dad’s already talking trash,” admitted 15-year-old Jake. “I guess I’ll have to step up my game.”
Local bike shops are thrilled with the sudden surge of interest from older riders. “We’ve never sold so many high-end e-bikes to the over-40 crowd,” said a spokesperson from a Gymea bike store. “It’s like a midlife renaissance on two wheels.”
With the Masters E-Bike 500 on the horizon, the Shire is gearing up for a showdown between generations. Whether it’s a race for glory, bragging rights, or simply an excuse for a post-race latte, one thing is certain: the MAMILs are ready to electrify the competition.
